Thank you Vincent for your work: here in Italy we appreciate it very much!
A brief question about 24p management
did you compare the LE40F86 24p with the Pioneer PDP508XD 24p management? Can you comment the differences?
I know Pioneer uses a 24hz multiplied by 3 to get 72hz on the screen, but we don't know very well what Samsung performs on serie M, F and F9, so a comparison can help us to understand. What I know is that both are quite smooth with 24hz...

Thank you

@ Vincent -  I'm not sure whether you still have the F86 but, if you do, a couple of owners (including MDX from above) have reported a fault whereby they occasionally see a 2-3 second slowdown of on screen action.  I've asked the question as to which source(s) they see this on and I'm awaiting a reply.

Obviously this was not something you observed during you review but, if you stil have the set, it might be something to look out for.

Vincent,---I have read with great interest all the above Techie comments about the F86,etc.etc. I get the feeling they are all waiting for "Vincent" to make them either relax with the F86 at over £1000 or stick with M86 or the Panny or Sony Brav (which seems not to have a mention recently in comparisons etc) so I must admit this is my first LCD or Plasma  big screen, and I want to get it right--I have my money in hand waiting ,as this is my first venture since I bought my last tv a CRT  some 7 years ago, so Vincent , with the greatest of respect whats your verdict matey--- ///???

The only thing that puzzles me is this 8bit/10bit thing and that the M seems to be superior because of the 10bit Panel. I had TVs with an 8bit Panel and you could see that there weren't enough colours and this results in an effect called "solarisation" (like when you change your colors on your PC to 256colors or 16bit). But after all I don't know exactly if this 8bit/10bit thing really has something to do with solarisation.

Is it true that the Samsung F has only a 8-bit Panel, but the M86 has 10bit? So M86 would be capable of showing much more different color-tones?

i have an e-mail from samsung confirming the F86 has the same 10 bit panel as the M86. Whether this "10 bit panel" is indeed an 8bit native panel, but with a 10 bit LUT i dont know

but either way, the M86 is no superior to the F86. heres the e-mail

Does 1920x1080 work through VGA from Xbox 360 ?

Please I also wish to know if the problems of M86 series with VGA and Xbox360 @ 720p and 1080p have been fixed with the newer F86, thanx to everybody contributing.

HI,

  I'm thinking about buying LE46F86 - however I've just checked manuals (http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/UM/200708/20070831181908796_BN68-01169L-00Eng-0817.pdf)
and it states maximum VGA resolution is 1440x900 - well, for M87 it is 1920x1080 - is it just a bug in documentation or F86 really doesn't support it? What about HDMI?

I got the response from Samsung:

"Please visit www.samsung.com/download. Enter your model code as
LE46F86BD. Please refer to setting the PC section on page 47 onwards.
The maximum resolution over VESAdSub is 1920x1080
The maximum resolution over VESA HDMI/DVI is 1920x1080"

So they are pointing to wrong documentation from samsung.co.uk product page.

Anyway it looks like it should be working properly.

Very important:
I discover that this model has big OVERSCAN (via HDMI) !!!
About 70 pix verically
and 110 pix horizontally.
No pixel to pixel mode (or dot to dot (as Sharp).
It means that wathing Full HD is impossible !!!
