Hi guys I have the Philips 42PFP5532D/05, it has been great for the price with well above average SD picture quality and nice enough HD quality. I read some reviews which were pretty negative but 99% of real USER reviews on forums were very positive.
I was at a friends house and he has a 42 inch plasma also, not like mine but same size. He has normal sky digital like me too. He switched to the sci fi channel and I noticed he is seeing more picture at the side of the screen than on BOTH of these PHILIPS sets I have had. (sent one back,it would not switch on) I could tell because on mine the little sci fi icon with the planet with a ring round it was right at the edge of my screen but on his its a few inches in, so effectively I am not seeing the full picture. I tried connecting my sky box through scart 1 and 2 and through RF but no joy. I also noticed on both my philips tv's that the borders at top and bottom u get on some shows are not even, the bottom one is always smaller than the top and during some commercials the writing at the bottom can be cut off a bit, usually visible on those annoyong credit card or loan adverts where they have terms and conditions at the bottom.
I thought maybe my sky box was not set to 16:9 but I double checked and it is! Since I have seen this with 2 of these tv's I think maybe its some stupid mistake in the factory where it's not calibrated correctly. One guy on another forum said he has this same problem. Is there something in the service menu or something to move the picture around like you do with a PC monitor? Or does this model of tv just suck.
If It cant be sorted I could get the Samsung PS42Q97HDX at the same price but I am worried about the horizontal lines with that set caused by the filterbright coating. I watched one in a store for 10 mins and saw them once for a few seconds, would they be visible during the day maybe with blinds closed and just a bit of ambient light, I dunno. Either way this whole TV business is giving me a headache.
