Sharp LC46-LE821 re-review and re-calibration
« on: 31 October 2010, 02:17:35 AM »
http://forums.hdtvtest.co.uk/index.php/topic,6405.0.html

Would it be possible for HDTVtest to contact Sharp and re-review the LE821.

HDTVtest has made a terrible mistake with their calibration tests or, I have the only Sharp LE821 Quattron that has:

Perfect Green, Red and Average Blue (Yellow is unknown, but it appears to be at the Green performance level in terms of clipping)
Perfect RGB clipping channels
Perfect shadow detail
Perfect greyscale
19ms pixel response and zero input lag

But I do not believe this is the case - that I have a super-special LE821 with no errors.

So convinced am I by this claim that I am putting HDTVtest to the test as to what they are going to do about this. I feel it would be in the best interests of HDTVtest and Sharp UK.

I have contacted Sharp UK concerning this matter and I have sent them my calibration of PC mode for this panel.

I have not applied this calibration to Movie and Game mode, but I will be working on it tomorrow (which is today). It's 1am in the morning here!

I can confirm that there is indeed a terrible problem with Movie mode on the Sharp panel related to this thread. It's Cyan that affects everything because it cannot be corrected - it won't react to any calibration as you would expect.

Movie mode is also affected by Brightness in a way that is hard to describe.
For instance, Brightness 0 completely ruins the Green clipping channel. Brightness -6 will improve it, but nowhere near the levels seen in PC mode and Game mode, which make the Green primary channel a joy to behold.
It is totally bizarre.

Movie mode does not respond to CMS calibration as it has with PC mode and Movie mode.

Game mode is an equal to PC mode, if not slightly superior in the Red channel.

* And the next bizarre thing is Movie mode's Blue clipping channel is slightly better than even PC mode. But I have no idea why on earth this is because my calibration disk tells me otherwise. Blue is obviously nowhere near as strong, but Movie mode is getting more detail out of it than PC mode.

I've finally made Movie mode's very detailed Blue primary to reflect that in PC mode.

It also had the effect of affecting Red, and once adjusted, the Red primary clipping component was even better than before.

I guess Sharp's CMS doesn't always bite the hand that feeds it.

Hi

Thanks for your feedback. There are usually differences from one sample to another even within the same model.

Just wondering, are you calibrating by eye, or by using a light measuring instrument?

Warmest regards
Vincent
