I've read with great interest all the reviews on this excellent site. I was starting to consider that the PX80 must be "the one" that would convert me from good ol' CRT.
Went to my local Curry's to-day, and apart from having to wait through minutes and minutes of 'self-advertising' on all screens simultaneously, none of which helped to sell the screens themselves, I was able, to some extent to compare the screens. I was not happy. Now this may very well be a result of the poor selection of content, source, set-up etc, and a salesman who could tell me what sold the most (Samsungs) but was surprised that the PX80 was 100Hz.
PX80 didn't seem to render crowds at a football match well (when panning, and following the ball). Seemed to have a distinct lack of clarity when compared to 1080 LCD next to it (even allowing for brightness differences and contrast). Indeed, I found a Kuro next door at PC World, which couldn't render the BBC text on 24 hours news properly either (eg clean vertical lines to the vertical elements of text). Everything just had a halo around it. I even checked my glasses for smears. The moving banner headlines also didn't display properly (though I saw some worse examples). Liked the colours and colour gradation though.
I was really hoping that the PX80 would have everything 'sorted' in terms of best possible processing of an SD or HD source. It's possible, of course, that I never even saw an HD source.
The make that seemed to stand out was Phillips, though there were clearly motion problems.
How does one get to compare these systems properly ? Go to the expensive shops and arrange proper demos ?
I just felt let down by the discussions I see on the boards, and wonder if there's an element of self-kidology working here. Or maybe my eyes are different.
