Blu-Ray Players
« on: 08 April 2011, 10:14:37 AM »
Hi,

Although I have not participated in the forums until now, I have really enjoyed the depth of the reviews on this site.  I have been struggling to find anywhere which offers similarly deep reviews for Blu-Ray players.  I have recently been disappointed with a Sony BDP-S370 because it has a noisy motor which most people seem not to hear and reviewers fail to acknowledge.  Can anyone recommend a good source of reviews for Blu-Ray players?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Hopkins,
That's interesting to hear. We actually did review a BD player once on this site.
BD players can be quite similar, but like you say, it's things like noisy motors which differentiate them.

If all you're playing is 1080p/24 BD films, then almost all players will give you the same picture quality. There's a couple that do things like forced grain removal, contrast stretching etc., but those are rare.

It's DVD playback and 1080i/50 and 1080i/60 handling that differentiates players.

HomeTheaterHifi.com tend to do really good reviews.

Hm, they don't seem to understand what the RGB levels option does. It's a right/wrong thing, not a matter of preference.
Fortunately almost nobody is using RGB...

OK i have a Sammy BD-D5500 Bluray player and so does my Dad, Pop in 'Cars 2 3D' or 'Toy story 2 3D' and every few minutes the player will skip back and start playing again, when this happens the display freezes until it either does it again or thechapter catches back up  ???, one of the players is on the most up to date F/W. However both these discs play faultlessly in my Pana BDT310 3D Player .

If anyone has any ideas please let me know  8), Ta  :)

Does seem a bit strange Martin, it skips in the same place on both of the Sammy players?

Martin are they both using FW 1018?

If memory serves me well  ??? No, This one i have now is the latest 1018 but my Dads is 1016, Same issue with both tho. Strange as my parents have watched ' Megamind 3d and several others with no issues ?.
If i get the chance tommorrow i may give Samsung a bell and see what they have to say, Its not a huge issue for me as i use the Sammy normally for 2D purposes and the Panny for 3D, But it should still work nonetheless  :)

Martin are both players connected to the Internet, because sometimes who ever produces the discs provide a patch when the disc is inserted in the machine?
