Hi folks.

Just registered on the forum. So hello all. :)

I live in Germany and have recently purchased the slightly less amazing G30E. I think the E stands for Europe so it has slightly different tuners and Vierra connect capabilities.

I've managed to set up a VPN so all my devices think I'm in the UK but I still can't get iPlayer or other English services. Is this is firmware thing? Is there a different firmware I can flash it with or some sort of work round? Not a major issue obviously, just would be nice.

All info greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

John.

Hello John,

Welcome to the Forum, the G30 is one fantastic Panel mate and on a par with all the rest. As for the question you posted i think maybe iplayer might be country specific but i am not 100% sure ? :)

Yeah, the panel is great.

re iPlayer; I have recently opened a VPN account in the UK so my TV thinks I'm in Manchester! Even now though it still gives me Geman streaming option. Maybe a factory reset with the VPN making the TV think it's in the UK may do it.

Just looking at a rather heated discussion going on, on AVForums regarding using Photo mode on the VT which according to Gizlaroc corrects the problem of the brightness on the panels being capped, i wonder if anyone has tried calibrating using Photo on the GT and what results were obtained or what effect this might have on the PQ?

Thats interesting, I think modes like photo or Game can be roughly calibrated to look ok but i'm sure there would be behind the scene proccessing going on which couldnt be fully dialled out. I read somewhere that Game mode could be calibrated quite well on the Sammys.
I know Movie mode is not as bright as standard on the Sammys. Are you going to have a tweak Baz ? ;)

Had a little tweak last night just adjusting brightness, contrast and colour but need to look more closely as you loose the CMS. :)

I'm in the mood to do another calibration on my GT maybe tonight, just to see how things are looking. :)

I would be interested in that Barry :), If you do get around to it perhaps you could post some graphs of your results  :P :P

We tried that during the G30 review because it bypassed the fluctuating brightness (which has since been fixed). The Photo mode has some advantages but the gradation and motion handling are definitely poorer. Have a look at the fade-in at the start of the Spears & Munsil disc (to give just one example). The fade is no longer smooth but stepped.

Tried a calibration last night, managed to get part way but my now ageing lap top is just not up to the job and kept locking up running the Chromapure SW so as soon as i find a job that will be on my shopping list.  :)

I did notice though that i had to reduce the RG quite a bit from my old value and had a small blip at about 70% stimuli. But from what i can see luminance values stayed the same. Mind you it was a nightmare as my Lap Top had to be rebooted at just about every real time adjustment. :(
