Not really HDTV question but i was just wondering did people used to get their CRT's calibrated back in the day, or did this just come about with the advent of HDTV's?

Yes, calibration did happen back then. I'm not sure to what extent it spread outside the US.

I think it became a bigger issue with digitally-based displays having crazy numbers of options to allow the customer to, eh, "inflict" themselves upon the picture.
