Need help please.
« on: 26 December 2011, 10:39:55 AM »
I need a TV for watching movies/sports and just dipping my toe into Blu-ray and 3D.  I have a budget of @£700 max.

I seemed to have narrowed it down to these, but can't decide which is best, can anyone help or suggest alternatives and why please?

Thanks and Merry Christmas. :D

Samsung UE-37D6530

Hello Hushpuppy.

I think this one would be a better choice to be honest, with better black levels, negligible crosstalk in 3D mode and out of the box excellent colour reproduction (True Cinema) it really is a steal at this price.

^ Agree with the above.

As for your 3 selections: we've not reviewed the UE40D6100 and UE37D6530 specifically. The Samsung LED LCDs can offer good performance, but like most ultra-slim LED LCDs they have some screen uniformity (brightness hot-spot) issues. They have good contrast performance (deep blacks) though.

The Panasonic TX-L37DT30 is good in 3D, we reviewed one. Its bright and Panasonic's LED LCDs tend to have good screen uniformity. But the black level isn't so great (greyish blacks) in 2D and the performance is definitely behind that of Panasonic's Plasmas, which are their main focus.

The TX-P42ST30 which tele1962 recommended is mostly good news - the only downside is some slight jagginess in 3D mode. Out of the 4 TVs discussed here it's what I'd go for.

If it counts for anything, I totally agree with previous suggestions on the ST30 side. Among other good things, I think, watching sports is especially going to be more spectacular than on beforementioned displays. I was amazed first time I saw football on HD sports channel on my S20.
If I had to choose only from that 3 options, I would pick UE40D6100.

I have to say every time i go into a Pana store the ST30 always has the best PQ from the GT and VT to my eyes ???, maybe just shop settings perhaps  :).

That's surprising. Maybe it's because the Gamma on the ST30 is lower (I managed to make some improvement to that in the service menu though). That might make it look better in a brightly lit store?

Thanks all for your replies.

I should have said that really no bigger than 42" (37" would be ideal) and maximum budget of @£750.

May I throw another model into the mix to see if anyones recommendations change?

LG 42LW55T

Thanks again

I would again go for the 42" version of the Pannny. :)

I'd say, it's inferior to Samsung because of poor black level. In that sense, black level and contrast performance are unarguably better on S-PVA panels produced and used by Samsung, rather than LG's IPS.
To me it is a really crucial point of having lifelike picture on your TV, so I prefer to stick with Samsung LCD or Panasonic PDP panels. They're usually very good for the money.

I have now been able to test both types of 3DTV and it would seem that my OH can't get along with active as it gives her a headache after only watching for a few minutes but she was fine with passive 3DTV.

With this in mind what are peoples thoughts as I think both Samsung and Panasonic are active 3DTV's, I am left with the LG, or are there still better alternatives?

My other option is to wait until the 3DTV passive/active issue sorts itself out and I just but a really top notch 40 or 42" for the time being but if so which one???? :-\

There is a small thread on the merits of either tech here or one of the lads might be able to help. ;)

Thats a shame that your other half gets headaches, Where was your Demo from ?, Most Demo's from big chain stores are pretty awful to be honest. I was demoed a Samsung UE55D800 LED and was given the wrong glasses at first, then a pair which had an almost flat battery. Also when Demoing Active 3D sets the Store lighting will almost certainly create 'Flicker' which could lead to the uncomfortableness.

Is there any chance you could try again, maybe if you have friends with an active set ?.

If your looking for quality 2D and in particular Blu-rays i would think twice about the LG LW550T, I had 3 of those and returned them all for several reasons, Bad Corner clouding which seems an edge lit LCD traight and my last one had awful Dirty screen effect. On the plus side the 3D was bright and great for animated 3D movies, however i found that 'real 3D' was underwhelming and lacked sharpness.

I would say at 42" one of the Panasonic's would be the best bet this year. CES is just around the corner now so you could wait a while and see what late spring brings to the table !.

Sorry thats not much help though  :)

We did one at Richer Sounds and another in John Lewis, but both were on the shop floor.

Not sure what to do now!!

Does your local Richer sounds not have a 'Demo Room' ?, If they do i am sure they would not mind setting up which ever TV you wanted to veiw so it was in the correct lighting conditions .
