Ok stupid question time, would I be better with an LG product if I am buying an LG TV, or doesn't it really matter?  I suppose I am thinking of remotes and possibly having to use 3 different ones, (Sky, LG for the TV and Samsung for the 5.1 and Blu-Ray?)

I have also read the reviews on Amazon and there was this one that worries me in respect of the Samsung kit....

'It also seems that if you use HDMI with ARC (Audio return channel) so that the channels selected on your TV are played via the surround sound then whatever you connect via the AUX/optical will not work.  (I have Virgin media connected via optical, and DTV from the TV itself... if ARC is enabled then optical does not work unless I unplug the HDMI cable.)'

And this one for the Panasonic kit...........

-One HDMI port only. This is a massive problem if you want to use your PS3 etc for surround sound. As it happens I only wanted to use SKY HD and oddly Sky does NOT output the 5.1 signal through HDMI but through SPDIF so I am not worse off (the only reason I kept the player) but if you want more than just Sky then you will find this very difficult indeed.

I will be using SkyHD and a Wii and I am told that optical is the best for sound, is it?  If so will I have the same problems with either kit??

Finally I should have said as its a 3DTV and WiFi enabled I am getting then clearly I would like a compatible Blu-ray player.

Thanks all so far.

Nothing stupid about it mate  :),
If i remember correctly the LG 550T will not pass through DTS, I believe it has ARC though but i could never get that to function on mine.

you could use optical from your sky HD box to the Panasonic and HDMi for the wii otherwise i'm a little stumped for suggestions  ???

Anyone got any views on this blue-ray player - Sony BDV-E370

It certainly seems to have some good reviews, I had 2 Sony BD S570 Players but both had a very loud drive which was very distracting. Not sure if this would be the same or not, In my opinion a Panasonic BD player is hard to beat this year  :). The Samsung BD-D5500 is another fine budget player with a nice quiet drive but at the moment has issues playing some 3D Movies. Samsung are looking into this  :)

Hi again,

What's people's views on the following please?

Onkyo TX-SR608 AV receiver - Clearance from Richer Sounds £270
Sony BDP-480MR Blue-ray - £132 (inc 5 year warranty) from Richer Sounds.

I realise its taking me over £300, so thought I had better up my budget.

The 608 has been superceeded by the 609 but i don't think you could go far wrong at that price  ;), The 480 Sony from what i heard still has the noisy whiny Drive of the 470/570 which i had and returned.

They have the Panasonic BDT 110 at richer sounds for £90. This model does not have built in wifi but the BDT 210 does at £145 or the BDT 310 with dual HDMi outs at £180.

If wifi built in is not a big deal for you the 110 is a cracking machine  :)

Thanks for all the help and advice I have decided to go for the following:

Blu-ray - Sony BDP-480MR  (Panman40 they offered me a deal, and promised me it won't whine!)
AV - Onkyo TXNR 509

I will be running it with a LG 42LW550T TV and Sky HD box.

Last question, in order to get the best out of everything (I will be running Sky HD and the LG 42LW550T TV and I would like to hook up my Wii) which type of cable should go from where to where and in what order for optimum sound, picture etc?

Thanks again everyone.

My Wii is hooked up with a Component cable to my Media Receiver as that has the Component connectors built onto it, the Component cable gives a better picture than just the supplied one but costs about a tenner, its still not HD though as the Wii isn't capable of HD.

Good Choice hushpuppy  ;), I would connect your Sky HD box with HDMi to TV but also an Optical lead from your Skybox to your Onkyo to get 5.1 DD from the Sky HD Box  :).

If you think there is owt we can help with just ask mate, Also if you do have any probs with your new Kit I can garauntee that Richer sounds will bend over backwards to sort it out  ;D

Thanks for the help re connections. Is there any truth with regards to quality of HDMI cables??  If so what do people recommend (without breaking the bank!)  I currentlu use a 1m cable which is black with blue at either end and has gold connectors (I don't know the make)
