Basic 3D Calibration?
« on: 21 January 2012, 11:23:10 AM »
Just wondering if anyone has done a 3D Calibration using either a Calibration Disc for Brightness / Contrast / colour and Tint or had a proffessional Calibration ?.

I tried using the AVSHD Disc last night in 3D conversion Mode wearing the 3D Glasses , I was quite surprised at how things were in comparison with 2D calibration.

First of all Brightness was much more pronounced and easier to get Ref 16 Black with Bar 17 and up Flashing and i ended up with Brightness at 48 for 'Standard Mode and Movie mode'. Now in 2D brightness needs to be set at 'Standard mode 54 and Movie mode 69'. I was surpised this was the case.

Colour was also unusual compared to 2D settings. Standard mode and Movie mode both required 44 with tint at 51/49. Now in 2D Standard mode needs colour at 40, Tint 51/49 and Movie mode 51 with tint 51/49.

The upshot is that my 2D settings look superb with vivid colours when needed with natural skintones/softer pallete colours aswell, Just how it sjould be. But when i popped in some 3D BD material to check how it looked (i was quite excited) i was very dissapointed with what i saw, I used Final destination 5 and Resident Evil but colours and the whole thing looked flat and washed out.

I have no idea why this would be but to be honest i have never really liked 'Real' 3D anyhow so far but find all my Animated 3D collection to be fantastic .

So if anyone has some good ideas or How to setup 3D any better i am all ears  :).

Cheers.

Is this with a Samsung PDP?

The biggest thing we find with 3D is that the Greyscale tracking is usually not very flat or accurate out of the box (see the charts in the reviews). That's what colours the image most...unfortunately it's also the hardest thing to fix.

Hi David,
yes the sammy pdp. the one in my sig  ;).
I will take another look at the reveiws, Its funny tho as i was able to make some very basic adjustments in the 2 point WB for 2D that gives nice Whites, gets rid of the red push and looks pretty good by Eye. I just cannot recreate the same thing by eye with Real 3D movies though.

Have you been able to Calibrate for real 3D with good results then ?.

Thanks  :)

Yes, take a look at the after charts in the reviews - we can often get a surprisingly flat result with the 2point control. Certainly a big improvement on out-of-the-box.

Yup i took a butchers at those  :), Copied  :-[ the D8000 WB settings over and it does look much better now :D, Surprising how 2D on this set requires less Red in the WB yet 3D requires a fair amount more  :o.

Cheers
