Sony 2013 LED LCD TVs (W9/ W8/ W6)
« on: 17 May 2013, 05:07:58 PM »

Just realised there's no dedicated thread for this. Let's kick things off with a review of the Sony KDL-55W905A:

I was literally creating the thread while you posted it already. :-[
Great review! Looks like Sony's OOTB settings are still very good. And the lowest input lag is a good indication for their lineup: AFAIK, all 2013 Sony LED LCDs (except for low-end models) use similar X-Reality PRO chipset. So, they may all have pretty small lag.

This year just seems to get better and better, and Sony seem to be on the up and up again which is where they should be. But come on Sony gives us a decent CMS :)

I bet even with a CMS, we couldn't have got a visibly better result. So thumbs up to Sony on that count.

It does look like they're getting back on form. I still miss the Sony of the mid-2000s.

Do you know if other sites have had this exact "review sample" before you ?

I know mate but would be nice to have the option for serial fiddlers like me.

Nice review ,i wish some one can check with the X.V color based Blu Ray.

But my question how is one supposed to calibrate it with the X.V color.

Btw what panel is this using it it a samsung panel or some thing else.?

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for the kind words. Yes, the sample I reviewed appeared to have done the rounds.

But my question how is one supposed to calibrate it with the X.V color.

Someone somewhere needs to author some xvYCC test patterns.

I believe it's an AUO panel.

Warmest regards
Vincent

Hello everyone, excellent review.
I am about to buy new tv for my living room, how do you think which one to go for:
55ST60, 55VT60 or 55W905
do not really know, I have read all the reviews on here and just need confirmation. I have normal viewing condition and my room is not to bright. The most important for me is just pure PQ in 2D HDTV/BDP and maybe from time to time 3D on Bluray. I do not play games and don't even own any PS3:) I think that I am video purist, just need TV which makes me WOW.
Just tell me please, which one for me?
Is this W9 better performer than the newest panny plasmas?

^^ Thanks for your kind words.

If you don't game and do not have a bright room (so no need for good anti-reflection filter), the Panasonic TX-P55ST60 is easily the best choice out of your shortlist.

Vincent

hi vincent and thx to the review,

talking about the viewing angle issue, I took some pictures of my television to compare them with photos of the W905 from the review, but for me there is not much difference

Sony w905

front

side

vertical

Samsung r87

front

side

vertical

Samsung es8000

front

side

vertical

so it is possible that because of the more saturated colors you have this feeling that is not very real?

in the review you say that the panel of the W905 has a better native black level respect to hx855

"... on the Sony KDL-55W905A was less effective than that on its predecessor the HX853/HX850, simply because the native unassisted black level was better on the W9."

but comparing the reviews I read

w905
Calibrated black level (ANSI checkerboard)    0.049 cd/m2

hx855
Calibrated black level (ANSI checkerboard)    0.0457 cd/m2

can you explain this?

my last question is for the vinal verdict

in the review of f8000 i read alot of excelent in many field and in the w905 review only good and decent, plus the sony has very bad option to calibrate it, but the final verdict is the same
Highly Recommended

thanks for any replies

hello vincent, enjoyed reading the review of the W9, just wondered if you can confirm if the new Sony has  a Freesat HD tuner or is it just a free to air satellite tuner ?

so it is possible that because of the more saturated colors you have this feeling that is not very real?

Perhaps there's an element of that (especially with regards to the spot-on 25% to 75% saturation tracking points), and the fact that the PQ is so good when you look at it straight on. When compared to the F6400 and F7000 (both VA panels) I reviewed recently, the Sony W905 did desaturate earlier off-axis though.

in the review you say that the panel of the W905 has a better native black level respect to hx855
...
can you explain this?

On the Sony KDL-40HX853 I reviewed last year, native black level was 0.07 cd/m2... the ANSI result was obtained after engaging [LED Dynamic Control].

On the Sony W905A, native black level was 0.049 cd/m2, hence my statement.

my last question is for the vinal verdict

The rating takes into account all the aspects I feel are important. The Sony W9 delivers much better out-of-the-box picture, cleaner motion interpolation, native 24p playback in 3D mode, and lower input lag. The Samsung F8000 wins on post-calibration accuracy, SD processing for video-based content, slightly wider viewing angles, as well as brighter and flicker-free 3D images. I would say both are the top LED LCD TVs on the market today, hence the equal rating... it depends on what attributes are more important to you.

hello vincent, enjoyed reading the review of the W9, just wondered if you can confirm if the new Sony has  a Freesat HD tuner or is it just a free to air satellite tuner ?

Thanks for your kind words. I managed to receive Freesat HD channels on it (BBC1 HD, BBC2 HD, ITV HD and Channel 4 HD). Please be aware that unlike some high-end Panasonic and Samsung TVs, the Sony W905A doesn't have twin-tuner capabilities, i.e. you can only watch either Freeview OR Freesat - you can't watch them in PnP/PiP, or watch one and record the other.

Warmest regards
Vincent

Does W9 have a protective Gorilla glass or similar as last year HX855 had?
