JVC DLA-X500R D-ILA Projector Review
« on: 31 March 2014, 12:17:43 PM »

I must admit, I was really sceptical about how JVC's 2014 projectors would compete with the Sony native 4K projectors, but I need not have worried. Forget 4K, the JVC X500 is in a class of its own when it comes to black level & contrast ratio - the most important attribute of picture quality. Here's my full review:

Good read :)

Isn't there some way you could add MLL measurements? If you stated what method and what type of screen was used, it should be able to provide a reference of comparison for people looking to buy a PJ..? If done properly, it could indicate at least what was possible with a specific PJ+screen setup..? Not sure how you would position the meter, though... (Yes, I'm a MLL whore :P who isn't?! :P)

Btw, I saw you've added a "Best in class" mark to the final "verdict". Nice addition. However, what will happen if you review another PJ/TV which is better in its class after that spot has already been taken..? Will the marking be "moved" over to the new one..? Just curious, as it's still early in the year :)

It's notoriously difficult with projectors. Needless to say, if it wasn't, we'd have done it.

The light output reflected off the screen depends on the room, how it's treated, the screen gain, the age of the lamp, the projector setup, the size of the projected image... it's so much more complicated than putting a probe in front of a direct-view display.

Ugh-oh! Well, in that case: Sod it.

(True, even i a pitch black room, the walls will still reflect the light from the PJ. It slipped my mind...)

Not necessarily, but the other factors make it a no-go.

If we had a dedicated test lab that we could keep forever, we could do it and offer some sort of comparisons.

Yup, the worst thing with projectors is that the MLL/Contrast measurements must be at least repeatable.
Change one variable of environment, and all your previous results are irrelevant.
Having a lab would allow at least to provide comparative results, but this is much more complicated than usual display measurements.
I totally understand why David and Vincent won't go there.

Ah, it would be great for HDTVtest to have a dedicated lab someday...
Have you seen all the toys David Katzmier has at CNET? :o

Yep, seen it... Wish I had a lab like that :P It would probably serve HDTVtest better, though.
Still, HDTVtest is the best ;)

Yes, I've visited to help with 4K stuff. Very nice room!

Vincent,

If you still hv access to the projector (and now that you hv the AVLap 4K TPG, can you confirm the colour space of the X500 when it receives a 4K signal. I remember reading that the colour space is not linear and out of whack, different from the regular 1080p colour space.

^^  Hi Ventakesh

I no longer have the unit around, but as far as I can remember, only 4K at 50p/60p locks the CMS into an inaccurate gamut. Don't quote me on that though. I can check again when I review the X700.

Warmest regards
Vincent

Vincent,

Not sure if u tried sending an upscaled 4K signal and comparing it the same source without upscale to see if there were any differences?

I know it seems counterintuitive as it would upscaling a 1080p to 4K and since its not a 4K projector, more processing to show the image but I'm curious.

I hv the RS4910 but do not have a player or video processor that can upscale to 4k.
