Sony HW55 SXRD Projector Review
« on: 02 April 2014, 07:15:37 PM »

Continuing on my recent projector review binge (ok it's only 2 lol), I've tested the Sony VPL-HW55ES, and found some small improvements over its predecessor the HW50, namely less flickery black frame insertion (BFI) and full-res 3D. Undefeatable edge enhancement in the BFI mode was still there though:

That's disappointing - I let them know about this over a year ago.

Great Review Vincent.

Pretty much in line with what I saw in the set as well. Dynamic Iris did seem to help with low apl scenes though.

^^ Thanks Ventakesh. Yeah the DI probably did help with low APL too, but I was just too miffed at how it washes out bright scenes.

Warmest regards
Vincent

So, since you know OLED in person, do you still prefer watching movies at the big screen, Vincent?  ;)

^^ Nothing beats big screen, and I think the blacks of JVC & Sony projectors are good enough.  :)

Warmest regards

Thanks for the excellent write up Vincent. As regards to the gamma correction, was that 2.4 that you used to bring it closer in line? Would games suffer in any way using that gamma correction? Lastly, what manual iris setting did you setttle on to maintain good black level/brightness and was that with eco lamp mode?

Many thanks.

Harry.
